Tanning tips

As June comes to an end, we are set to see the best temperatures of the summer yet. Finally! This 2 week long heatwave is set to begin today and as we can already tell, it hasn't disappointed. But, before thinking about that gorgeous summer glow, here's a few tips on how to tan safely:

1. Always wear lotion

You may think that the British weather sun isn't as strong, but that's not true at all. When temperature's soar as much as they have, you must still remember to put on suntan lotion before heading out. Not being used to the weather makes you a lot more likely to burn, which is never good. A good factor and brand helps; apply 20 minutes before you head out and top up every hour or so to ensure that while you're tanning, your skin is still being looked after.

2. ...and sunglasses!

Always remember your sunglasses! They aren't just there to finish off your outfit, they are really important when being out in the sun. To prevent you from squinting and UV damage to your eyes, make sure you invest in a good pair that have the right protection against UV. You'll know if they're any good; a sticker or label will indicate the sunglasses provide full protection.

3. Gradual tan

If you're desperate for a tan but your skin burns easily or you don't like sitting out in the sun, a lot of brands now offer gradual tan moisturiser. I have been using these for the past couple of weeks and have definitely noticed a difference; it's much better than looking pale in your summer clothes. Simply apply after a shower everyday and you will soon notice a summer glow appear. My favourite's are No7's Naturally Sun Kissed or Garnier's Summer Body.

4. Face off!

When applying lotion, don't forget to pop a little bit on your face, especially your nose and cheek bones. These are the most sensitive areas and will burn very easily. SPF lip balm will also prevent your lip from drying and peeling. I apply SPF lip balm all year round, it works really well and really helps your lips from drying out. My favourite is Carmex ultra moisturising lip balm and for a pop of colour, Clinique have a great range of SPF lipsticks.

5. After sun

After a day of sunbathing, you will feel like cooling off. After sun is a great way to do this. A lot of people think that you only need to use after sun if you have burnt, which is true and helps to protect the skin from further sun damage, but looking after your skin even after sunbathing will help tanning as well. Using an after sun with aloe vera are even better at rehydrating your skin, as well as assisting skin repair, so make sure you have a bottle with you. My choice would have to be Banana Boat aloe vera after sun gel.

So, as this heatwave is set to last, make sure you use my tips and by the end of summer, you'll have truly looked after your skin and definitely be ready to show off that great tan.

Best of the high-street sales

Summer sales are all about grabbing that unbelievable bargain, whether it be to add to your new summer wardrobe or to get ready for those winter trends. A lot of spring/summer collections find their way into the summer sale as they are seen as out of trend but really, they haven't even had a chance to be worn in the summer sun yet.

This June, we have seen some of the best sales around. From winter coats to bikinis, summer heels to all-year-round dresses, if you have been looking to get something particular, nows the time to have a look around and grab it for a bargain.

If you're like me and don't enjoy trying items on in store and making impulse buys, take a look online. There's a lot more choice and you're more likely to spot something, instead of raiding through rails in attempt to find that one item. As well as this, shopping online gives you the opportunity to add promotional codes, whether it be student discount or codes from online websites, that they wouldn't allow you to use in store on top of already discounted items.

Here's a few items that I've found while looking through the sales:

Mini skirt (was £30, now £10)River Island
Playsuit (was £85, now £39)Coast
Underwear (was £42, now £14)Boux Avenue
Pom pom shorts (was £32, now £15)Topshop
Shirt dress was (£69.50, now £34.50)Jack Wills

Holiday destination: Hisaronu

Hisaronu is a beautiful resort village in the Fethiye district of the Mugla Province of Turkey. With mountains surrounding the whole area, the village has some of the best views of any holiday resort. The temperature in Hisaronu is very high, both times I have visited it has easily reached around 45 degrees.
With a large choice of shops, bars and restaurants, the village is very popular with both tourists and locals. In the day time, Hisaronu is a lovely town to look around, do some shopping and grab a light lunch or drink. However, as the sun sets, the night definitely comes alive. The bars have great deals on drinks and no matter what your age, there is something fun for everyone. From fire dancers to late-night restaurants, rooftop clubs to shisha lounges, all of the family will enjoy the evening entertainment in Fethiye. And for those who don't enjoy partying or drinking, the shops stay open late so you can still enjoy the great atmosphere.

One great thing about the location of Hisaronu is the access to other places and the excursions that are available to you. The first time I visited Hisaronu, we went on a jeep safari which included visiting mud baths, Patara beach, Saklikent Gorge and Yakapark Trout Farm. It was a brilliant day out, in tranquil surroundings.
Last year, we decided to go on the 12 island boat trip, which I wasn't particularly looking forward to. However, it was one of my favourite days of the holiday. A relaxing and peaceful day, with a great opportunity to top up my tan! When we stopped at each island, we could get off the boat and have a swim around; even jump off the top deck if we were brave enough. We also spend a day at the local aqua park, with slides and pools to relax in and have a bit of fun.
All excursions have their own photographer too; at the end of the day you take a look at all of the photos and can buy the set. We did this both times, we didn't have any time to take photos and he documented both trips for us, the photos turned out great.
I would highly recommend all excursions as they were so much fun and didn't cost much at all!

Hisaronu is also only a 20 minute dolmus ride away from Fethiye, the closest city. Tuesday is the day to pick if you want to take a trip there as it's market day; you'll be right amongst the hustle and bustle of local traders and customers. It's a brilliant time to grab a few bargains and to take a look at the 'genuine fake' goods, as well as the locally made and sourced products.
As well as this, Fethiye itself is a beautiful city, with many different parts to it. Get lost in the side streets and find yourself a hidden cafe, or take a look in some of Turkey's high-street stores, where clothes and leather goods are at some of their best prices.

If you're after another way to top up your tan and visiting another village, then take a trip to Oludeniz. A 5 minute dolmus ride away lies the picturesque lagoon that is one of the most photographed regions  in the Mediterranean. The village itself is pretty, with bars and cafes running alongside the beach front; perfect for a lunchtime snack or a quick refreshment from that midday sun. If you go to Oludeniz, make sure you take the opportunity to try a watersport; whether it be jet-skiing or a banana boat ride; the lagoon is definitely the place to do it!

I would definitely recommend Hisaronu for a beautiful summer holiday. The excursions, location, temperature and beaches are just some of the reasons that make me want to go back; there is always something to do and whether you're looking to relax or get involved; there is something for everyone and you are sure to enjoy it.

My pick: Top trainers

When it comes to footwear, I can't get enough of trainers.
For everyday wear, trainers are definitely the comfiest option. Sandals, skater shoes and heels are all lovely and I love wearing them but I always find that my feet start aching a lot sooner.
There's so much choice when it comes to trainers; design, custom, colour. And you can always grab a bargain by shopping around. My top tip: if you're a UK size 6 or below, shop in the children's department for trainers; the same trainers for half the price.

So, if you're like me and live in comfy trainers but like to be stylish, here's my pick of the best:

1. Nike Roshe Run Aloha

A summery twist on the original Roshe Run, inspired by Zen. This shoe is great to wear all year round and makes a statement when wore with simple clothes.

2. Converse All Star white mono leather

For me, Converse will always be an original trainer. These white leather ones are one of my favourites; they go with absolutely everything and being leather, are so much easier to clean.

3. Adidas Superstar 1

First released in 1969, Adidas created the first low top basketball shoe that will never go out of style. A classic trainer which goes with anything - and lots of colours to choose from!

4. Nike SB Stefan Janoski

A great shoe for an everyday monochrome look. Pair with a pair of skinny jeans or denim skirt for a casual but comfy look.

5. Nike Air Max 1 Ultra Moire

I absolutely fell in love with these trainers when I got them for my birthday. The colour is beautiful, perfect for summer. I wear them with everything, but paired with white jeans creates a perfect summer look.

Beaches, bellinis and books

I don't know about you but when it comes to summer, I just can't stop reading. Relaxing in the sun with a cold cocktail and great novel is the perfect way to unwind. On holiday especially, I can easily get through a book a day and always make sure I take enough with me (which usually means buying an extra couple at duty free).

So, in preparation for my holiday (5 weeks and counting, yay!), here's my pick of the best girly holiday reads:

1. The Sunrise by Victoria Hislop

I have been a huge Victoria Hislop fan since I read 'The Island'. The sense of time and place draws you in to the setting and the story seemed to move me; I didn't want the book to end.
In 'The Sunrise', Hislop again entices the reader and takes you back to 70's Cyprus; this novel will definitely grab your attention. A tale of community troubles and love, this fascinating read gives a truly detailed insight into a conflict that isn't often spoken about. An intelligent and beautifully written novel once again.

2. The Lemon Grove by Helen Walsh

Set in Mallorca, this novel grips the reader with desire and passion. The descriptive writing from Walsh gives a brilliant sense of atmosphere and lust; you'll find yourself racing through this book at the same speed of the fully-charged plot. A very intelligent take on a modern marriage, with sexual tension evident in every aspect of the book. My top pick for a holiday read; you'll see this novel everywhere by the pool!

3. In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume

A deeply moving, fictional novel which revolves around the real-life series of airplane crashes that took place in New Jersey from 1951-1952. Blume focuses the story on a young girl, Miri, who is in the centre of the event. She experiences love and pain throughout, showing that growing up in such circumstances can show the next generation that life will go on. As the story proceeds, we meet a lot of the community and see how their lives entwine; in a story of love, loss and friendship. An unforgettable novel that will reassure you.

4. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

I am not usually a thriller reader but with everyone talking about this novel, I thought I would give it a go. And I'm definitely not disappointed.
Rachel is not your typical main character. She has many flaws which leave her longing to be wanted and loved, that is until the story she has created between two strangers becomes a real-life nightmare which she becomes involved in.
This wonderful, well-written journey is a real heart-racer. The debut novel from Hawkins is outstanding - a must read this summer!

5. Royal Wedding by Meg Cabot

Growing up reading 'The Princess Diaries', I can't wait to see what this novel has to offer. Cabot returns with the 11th book in the series, and the first to be aimed at an adult audience.
Princess Mia Thermopolis of Genovia has her hands full; wedding planning, helping her Father, running a community centre and now, having to hide from not only the press, but a stalker!
Will the wedding go to plan? Or will Grandmere ruin everything?
I can't wait to find out...

Designer day out

On Saturday, Ollie and I went to Bicester Village to take a look at what they had and hopefully, come away with a few bargains. The weather was rubbish and it rained practically the whole time we were there but we definitely didn't let it dampen our moods!

All of the shops had sales, which made it so much more enticing to go mad with designer buys. I bought a couple of things but managed to stick to a budget and not splurge out on the latest must-haves in designer trends. Although, I was very, very tempted by a lot of things. My choice of shops would definitely have to be Michael Kors, Dolce and Gabbana, Prada and Kate Spade.

The Best of British collective is also being showcased at Bicester this June, with a pop-up boutique exhibiting some of the finest British design talent. With brands including L.K.Bennett, Mulberry and Ted Baker, this event is a must-see. The in-store and village entertainment is brilliant, with live bands and photo booths for some fun in-between shopping.

Overall, we had a brilliant day and although we didn't buy as much as usual (even if there were sales), we know that when we go back we'll definitely make up for it! Bicester is a must for shopping if you're into designer brands, or just love a bargain, and with trips from Oxford and London, it's convenient for everyone.

Festival fever

If there's anything I enjoy more than music, it's a music festival!
Last year, I went to V Festival where I saw Ed Sheeran, Bastille, George Ezra and Example take to the stage, along with headliner, Justin Timberlake.
In 2013, I attended Reading Festival where Chase and Status, Biffy Clyro, Disclosure and Eminem were just a few names on the line-up.

I'd always wanted to go to a festival so, for both occasions, I looked at all of the line-up's for the majority of music festivals and decided on my favourite. The idea of live music, staying up late, camping with your friends and a whole new festival wardrobe really appealed to me.

This year, I'm going to Wireless Festival in July, just for one day. The line-up is great; Avicii, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and Gorgon City, just to name a few. I can't wait.

But, for those of you who haven't seen the line-up's, or are deciding on which UK festival you want to attend, here's my list of top 5 UK music festival's for 2015:

1. Boardmasters

Boardmasters has definitely landed this year. The Cornwall based festival, held on the beach, has two of the biggest headliners; Bastille and Rudimental, as well as loads of other huge names. Dancing until the sunset next to the crashing waves seems like the perfect way to celebrate summer, and the organisation of the festival is brilliant.
Skate, BMX and surfing competitions mean there's something for everyone, and gives you a chance to do something a bit different when you wait for the music to begin. One to check out this year - you won't be disappointed!

2. Lovebox

Lovebox is one of the biggest up-and-coming dance festivals, with huge names being announced this year; including headliners Rudimental and Snoop Dogg. Held at Victoria Park in London, this event will take place on the 17 and 18 July.
For dance lovers, this is the place to be. Two days of non-stop partying will leave you wanting more and trust me - this festival certainly has more to come.

3. Wireless

This year, Wireless is celebrating it's 10 year anniversary - and it's doing it in style. With the 3 day festival being held on the 3/4/5 July, it's already starting to sell out quickly. Drake, Avicii, Kendrick Lamar, David Guetta and Nicki Minaj will be the headlining acts, with many other huge names also taking to the stage.
To make the tenth year one to remember, Wireless have set up a one-off day festival on 28 June. This event is also being held in Finsbury Park, and sees performances from Friday's headliner Drake, Rita Ora, Kid Ink as well as many other international names.

4. Creamfields

Creamfields is probably the UK's biggest dance festival and this year, have only got better. Oliver Heldens, Tiesto, Rebel Sound, Kygo and Sub Focus are just a few of the international dance names to be included on this year's line-up.
Creamfields for me definitely has the best line-up out of all of the UK festivals this year; I just wish I could go. This festival will one hundred percent finish your summer with a bang, and leave your August bank holiday weekend being the best one yet!

5. V Festival

V Festival is hosting it's 19th event during the penultimate weekend of August. V has welcomed some of the biggest names in the business over the years and still continues to go above and beyond expectation, including this year, announcing Kasabian, Calvin Harris, Sam Smith and Stereophonics as just some of the artists to perform. V festival has included over 50 artists to perform this year - from every genre of music.
If you already have plans for this year, don't worry, I'm sure the 20th V Festival next year will be one for the diary!

Worcester lunch date

I finally had a day off work yesterday and planned to go out with my Nan. We had a lovely day in Worcester and bought a lot more than we should have - it definitely didn't help that there were sales everywhere!

She treated me to lunch at Zizzi's. I'd only been there once but she absolutely loves it and practically knows the menu off by heart! I opted for the Pepperoni Campagna pizza and Nan had the skinny Primavera pizza. The choice on the lunch menu was great and even though we were both stuffed, we definitely wish we'd have had 2 courses.

It was a great day for celebration too - Nan's going on holiday on Friday and I've just had a pay rise (maybe a bit of shopping was necessary after all...)!!

My spring buys

It's definitely no secret that I love shopping. From winter coats to summer sandals, there's always so much choice and I love hunting down a great item for an even greater price. So as you can imagine, when my mum told me I'm not allowed to buy anything until after my birthday, I was pretty gutted.

Since my birthday in May, I have more than made up for my lack of spring shopping. With the weather getting nicer and days getting longer, I have made a lot of purchases - and grabbed some bargains too!

These are just a few of my favourite:

1. White Pacha embroidered bardot dress - River Island

I love this dress. It's bang on trend with a bardot sleeve and embroidered design. A little bit see-through, but perfect for a beach dress or over a pair of white shorts!!

2. Popsicle Ghillie lace strappy heel - Office

I had been looking for a pair of lace up heels for a while when I spotted these from Office. Fitted perfectly in a size down and so comfortable! A bargain too - reduced to £35.

3. Vienna twisted bikini - Boux Avenue

I try to buy one new bikini every year. This year, I was hoping to buy a cheap one but fell in love when I saw this set in Boux Avenue. The twisted design is perfect and girly - and the colour is to die for. By using my unidays app, I managed to save £4 too!

4.  Embellished kimono - River Island

I absolutely fell in love with this kimono as soon as I tried it on. The embellished detail is beautiful and the print is bold but classy. Quite a heavy kimono - a perfect jacket jacket for summer nights and cooler days. A statement piece that goes with anything!

5. Cold shoulder tassel fringe top - Topshop

I love the bardot design for summer and this top is perfect. Light to wear and detailed at the bottom with embroidery and fringing - for a more expensive but casual look.

My pick: Classic designer pieces

Designer's work their style around a specific piece or idea and usually, their most popular piece will never go out of style. With pieces around for so long, they become known to that designer. For example, Christian Louboutin's red sole has become a statement that is instantly recognisable and will now, never go out of style.

Over the years, classic pieces become desirable for a lot of people, including myself. They are items that whether you bought 20 years ago, this week or in 50 years' time, they will always be on trend and a statement piece for any wardrobe.

These are my top 5 favourite designer pieces:

1. Celine handbag

The structured shape of the bag makes it instantly recognisable as a Celine. My favourite is this medium luggage handbag in the soft grey leather.

2. Chanel flapbag

This classic piece is one of Chanel's greatest products. Always on trend and wearable with any outfit, it will never go out of style.

3. Valentino sandals

More recently, Valentino sandals have been getting more and more popular. They are everywhere! This 'ballerina' style in baby pink is my all-time favourite, with rock studs making them a bit more edgy.

4. YSL tassel satchel

Saint Laurent are bang on trend with this satchel. The chain makes it wearable and the initial detail and tassel add a glamorous touch. The nude colour is my favourite, along with the metallic silver.

5. Dior cat-eye sunglasses

Sunglasses are always a necessity to have, especially now summer is approaching. These Dior cat-eye shades are perfect, with a classic shape and subtle rose-gold tint.

2015 summer playlist

Every summer you make a whole load of new memories; whether it be on holiday, with your friends, at an event or simply chilling in the sun. For the majority, songs can bring back memories just as well as pictures or videos can! Last year for example, Ed Sheeran brought us the beautiful 'Thinking Out Loud' and Oliver Heldens got everyone dancing all night with 'Gecko'.

After much deliberation, I managed to whittle down my essential summer songs to just 10 songs (and a few that are just too good to cross off).
So, here's my summer songs for 2015:

1. Lean On - Major Lazer

The current number one is a brilliant summer song, released as the lead single for Major Lazer's 3rd studio album.

2. Bad Blood - Taylor Swift ft. Kendrick Lemar

Taylor Swift recently teamed up with rapper Kendrick Lemar to create this incredible number one single. If the video is anything to go by, it's sure to be huge for quite a while!

3. Freak of the Week - Krept and Konan

Get your dancing shoes on! The first official single for their debut album The Long Way Home will definitely leave you wanting more.

4. Holding On - Disclosure

The first single to drop since their 2013 album, Disclosure have not disappointed. Their 2015 album 'CARACAL' will be available from September.

5. Where Are U Now - Jack U

Skrillex and Diplo have teamed together to become Jack U and have since created some great songs. Where Are U Now ft. Justin Bieber is my favourite one yet.

6. Nobody to Love - Sigma

A fantastic summer song that makes you want to roll the windows down and turn up the radio! This one will keep on coming back.

7. Sexual Healing (Kygo remix) - Marvin Gaye

A well-produced remix of a brilliant classic song. Check out Kygo's other songs.

8. Never Let You Go - Rudimental

Rudimental come back every year with even bigger and better summer songs. From 'Waiting All Night' in 2013 to their newly released 'Never Let You Go', they are the new sound of summer.

9. Believer - DJ Fresh

Following his collaborations with Diplo, Ella Eyre and Ellie Goulding amongst others, DJ Fresh is back with Adam F with their new single ‘Believer’. A great summer song!

10. Shut Up + Dance - Walk the Moon

American rock band Walk the Moon are back with a second studio album and released their first single 'Shut Up + Dance' as a debut. These guys are definitely ones to look out for.

Ones that didn't quite make the cut...

  • Post to Be - Omarion

  • Is This Love (Montmartre Remix) - Bob Marley

  • I Know There's Gonna Be - Jamie XX

  • Cheerleader - Omi

  • Not Letting Go - Tinie Tempah ft. Jess Glynne

Stratford spa afternoon

Yesterday, Charlotte and I went on a complimentary spa afternoon at Regal Hair and Beauty, Stratford-upon-Avon. We had seen the offer advertised on the internet and didn't quite know what to expect - but we were overwhelmed.
The venue was lovely and the staff made sure we felt welcomed and comfortable from the moment we arrived.

We then got to choose a treatment each and opted for a facial and pedicure. The treatment room was very professional and the staff there made the experience even more worth-while. After having our treatments, we got a full makeover, including having our hair done.

We both thoroughly enjoyed this part of the afternoon. The beautician was amazing, asking us about our usual make-up style, in addition to offering suggestions about what she thought would work, in order to create a glamorous look that we also felt comfortable with.
She also put loose curls in our hair, to add something a bit different, ready for the next part of our afternoon.

The photoshoot was fantastic. The wonderful photographer spoke to us about our outfits and helped us decide what to wear in each part of the shoot. We both had such a laugh and felt very comfortable when having our photos taken. For both of us, this was our favourite part of the day.

We then finished the day with a glass of bubbly and bite to eat, while we browsed through the photos.

I would definitely recommend Regal Hair and Beauty for a perfect afternoon out.

On the scent

No matter where I'm going or what I'm wearing, choosing which perfume to apply is the most difficult decision to make. Wearing the right fragrance definitely makes you feel so much fresher and more confident. But, there's just so much choice!

Here's my top 5 perfumes and their ten word reviews:

1. Elie Saab - Le Parfum

Crisp, modern florals but not too sweet. My personal favourite.

2. Ralph Lauren - Romance

An all time classic fragrance with a light floral scent.

3. Narciso Rodriguez - For Her

Sensual, powerful scent you are sure to be complimented on.

4. Dolce and Gabbana - Dolce

Long lasting, gorgeous summer scent presented in a beautiful bottle.

5. Dior - Miss Dior

Dior classic. A gentle, floral fragrance perfect for summer days.

The test: Chisel Cheeks Contour Kit

From J-Lo to Pixie Lott, Taylor Swift to Millie Mackintosh, contouring is everywhere at the moment. But can good contouring be done on a budget? I purchased this Barry M contour kit to try out the latest trend - and to see if contouring can still look good without breaking the bank.

I started by applying just a thin layer of my every-day foundation. You can either contour underneath or on top of foundation and I found this set works better on top. The easy-to-follow steps inside the kit make it so easy to contour the right shade in the right place. However, you only need a tiny bit of the creme on your brush/sponge - it goes a long way!

This was half way through putting on the creme, I'd only done half my face! It is easier to put it all on first, and then blend, so you can see what you have done and make it symmetrical on both sides. You can add more once you have blended, to get your desired look.

After blending and adding a bit more, I was more than happy with how it looked. The creme is really good and gives you a lovely golden glow, perfect for summer and nights out. The only small downside would be that for my skin, the highlighter is a little too dark, but adding concealer sorted this out.
I then added bronzer onto my cheeks and mattifying powder onto the highlighted sections.

For only £6.49, I definitely achieved the look I was hoping to and would recommend this product to anyone looking for a budget, good quality contour set!

Summers day in Oxford

On Sunday, Ollie and I spent the day out in Oxford. Neither of us had ever been and we thought it would be a ideal day to just jump on a train and try somewhere new! We both absolutely loved it - the old buildings and cobbled streets were typically English and the city had a great atmosphere.

The shopping was pretty good too. A huge choice of shops - from high street brands to individual traders - made it seem a bit more varied compared to the usual shopping trips I take. We must have walked miles.

Taking a walk around the university grounds and park added a bit more variety to our day, and was only a minute's walk from the lively high-street. There was also opportunity to go on a selection of tours, but we thought we'd do a bit of adventuring ourselves!

There was more than enough choice when it came to food as well, with every restaurant chain you could possibly think of in addition to the many local pubs and restaurants. We ended up at Byron Proper Hamburgers and it definitely did not disappoint. I went for the 'Byron', a medium cooked burger with bacon, cheese, american sauce and salad - it is probably the best burger I have ever tasted. Oh, and their milkshakes are to die for!

I would 100% recommend Oxford for a beautiful day out or weekend getaway.
